"The Sons Of..." CD

Someone recently asked me- "What is up with all these different bars having 'Sons Of' bands? The Sons of O'Leaver's, The Sons Of the 49'er..." Well, actually, it turns out it is all the work of the same band, borrowing the venue name for any given night.

It's part frustration of having to find a band name, part tribute to all the glorious one nighters that so many forgotten bands have pulled off through the history of rock. The Sons developed as a short term project after the demise of The Hong Gyn Corp, which featured the talents of singer/guitarist Kelly Maxwell, as well as drummer Mike Loftus. Bassist Mike Tulis was recruited from The Monroes, and guitarist Matt Rutledge came on board as well, to try to cram a record and a bunch of shows into the time before Maxwell was to leave Omaha for Pittsburgh. Sadly, that time is upon us, but thankfully the band has left behind a tasty momento to tuck into your rock scrapbook.

Maxwell's voice is always buoyant, ballasted by Rutledge's masterful leads and a rock solid rythm section. Guest musicians Cory Weber and Chris Senseney add pedal steel and organ respectively, bringing a dusty, high lonesome sound to the festivities. Fans of The Replacements, early REM or Guided By Voices can find plenty to be happy about here. Call it power pop, indie rock....whatever. We just call it good. Just try and get it out of your CD player!
